The Everest Renjo La Pass – Gokyo Ri Trek is a challenging but rewarding adventure combining lakes, glaciers, high Renjo La Pass and stunning view points in one single trek. An excellent panoramic 360’ views of four 8,000ers – Mt. Everest (8,848M), Lhotse (8,516M), Makalu (8,485M) and Cho Oyu (8,188M) from both Renjo La (5,360M) and also Gokyo Ri (5,357M). Climbing early to summit the Gokyo Ri rewards trekkers with golden light on Everest and other surrounding peaks. Gokyo Lake is a glacial freshwater lake, renowned as the world’s highest lake system and also it is a significant pilgrimage site for both Hindu and Buddhist communities. Trekkers get chance to immerse in the authentic unique culture, traditions and hospitality of the Sherpa people in their villages during this trip.
Detailed Itinerary
Fly Kathmandu to Lukla 2850M and start trek to Phakding (2,610M)
Highlights of the day: A thrilling 30-35 minutes of flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. First steps of the trek through Khumbu valley, passing through the charming small settlements and experiencing traditional sherpa culture and hospitality.
Trek Phakding to Namche Bazzar (3,440M)
Highlights of the day: A scenic trail on along the Dudh Koshi river, up hills and crossing several high suspension bridges including highest and longest famous iconic Hillary Bridge. Afterwards begin a long and steep ascent leading up to vibrant Namche Bazzar – a mix of adventure, culture and breathtaking scenery.
Trek Namche Bazzar to Khumjung village (3,790M)
Highlights of the day: The trail ascent gently from Namche, offering panoramic views of Kongde Ri, Thamserku, Ama Dablam and Mt. Everest in the distance. The path is less crowded which provides more peaceful trekking experiences. The surroundings are quieter and slightly higher than Namche, making it an excellent place for acclimatization.
Trek Khumjung village to Thame village (3,800M)
Highlights of the day: The trail heading northwest through a quieter valley – an ancient trade route to Tibet. The route offers a sense of serenity of the Thame valley and remoteness.
Trek Thame village to Lungden (4,380M)
Highlights of the day: The trail gradually ascent along the river with a mix of pine forests, rocky paths and high pasturelands – giving way to more rugged Himalayan scenery. The trail leads deeper into the valley, historically used by Tibetan traders bringing salt, wool and yak caravans into Nepal.
Trek Lungden to Gokyo Lake 4,900M via crossing the Renjo La Pass (5,360M)
Highlights of the day: A steep challenging ascent to the Renjo La Pass, climb on the rocky, zigzag trails but the views from top are breathtaking, offering panoramic 360’ views including Mt. Everest (8,848M), Lhotse (8,516M), Makalu (8,485M) and Cho Oyu (8,188M). As you descent, turquoise water of Gokyo’s 5 scared lakes start appearing, contrasting beautifully with the surrounding peaks.
Early morning hike to Gokyo Ri (5,357M) for the sunrise and trek downhill to Machhermo (4,470M)
Highlights of the day: Early in the morning hike to the summit of Gokyo Ri, after the sun hits on the mountain peaks – the golden light slowly revealing the Himalayan giant is an unforgettable experience. Afternoon is a beautiful descent day to Machhermo.
Trek Machhermo to Phortse village (3,810M)
Highlights of the day: An easy and beautiful downhills trail to Phortse Tenga, passing through yak pastures, rhododendron forests which offers the best wildlife spotting opportunities as well. After Phortse Tenga, the trail is steadily upping hills through pine and rhododendron forests. A small village of Phortse gives it a more authentic Sherpa feel.
Trek Phortse village to Pangboche (3,930M)
Highlights of the day: A trail from Phortse to Pangboche is an eco-trail and one of the most scenic balcony trails. This route is offering fascinating view of Mt. Ama Dablam and other peak almost the entire day.
Trek Pangboche to Kenjoma (3,790M) OR Namche Bazzar (3,440M)
Highlights of the day: Descent gradually through forested trail, monastery, crossing a suspension bridge over Dudh Koshi River. Before reaching Kenjuma a trail is ascent slightly, meeting a junction where the Gokyo trail splits. Kenjuma is a small settlement which is quite spot and also offer an excellent view.
Trek Kenjoma/ Namche Bazzar to Lukla (2,850M)
Highlights of the day: Long and steep descent on the stone steps through pine forest via Namche Bazzar. Easy ups and downs trail along the Dudh Koshi River, passing several small villages, mani stones, monasteries, prayer wheels and flags. A steady an hour uphill rote to reach your final destination – Lukla. Evening last trek day celebration with your guide and other crew members.
Fly Lukla to Kathmandu (1,400M)
Highlights of the day: The journey from Lukla back to Kathmandu.
